VALE GODFREY STEVENS
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Godfrey “Goff” Stevens on 18 December 2024.
Known as the “Godfather” of the Old Ivanhoe Grammarians Football Club, Goff was a towering figure in the Club’s history and a beloved member of the VAFA community. His contributions, both on and off the field, have left an indelible mark that will be remembered for generations.
Goff played an incredible 236 games for the Club between 1967 and 1980 and was celebrated for his rucking prowess, earning him a place in the Old Ivanhoe Teams of the Decade for both the 1960s and 1970s. Beyond his playing career, Goff served as Club President from 1994 to 2000, leading with passion, dedication, and vision.
A Life Member and Legend of the Club, Goff’s influence extended far beyond football. Together with his family, he was a cornerstone of the Club’s growth, contributing as a major sponsor from its formative years, often behind the scenes without seeking recognition. His generosity was pivotal in the development of key facilities, including the initial Chelsworth Club, the Harris Stevens social rooms, the electronic scoreboard, ground lighting and many other enhancements that have shaped the Club’s infrastructure.
Off the field, Goff’s passions included breeding pigeons, a pastime that reflected his unique and dedicated spirit.
Goff’s legacy will endure in the hearts of his numerous friends, family, and everyone at the Club. He will be profoundly missed, but his contributions will forever remain a source of inspiration and pride for all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Rest in peace, Goff.
